Between 2017 and 2019, the Given Group Foundation’s founder embarked on a mission that would transform the foundation’s core values. During conversations with leading foundation figures in South Africa, a pressing issue was brought to light: corporate social investment (CSI) programmes, while well-intentioned, were often misaligned with the real societal challenges.
Our founder worked tirelessly to engage with various organisations to bring attention to these issues. Although many corporate executives acknowledged the problem, they were often restrained by internal corporate politics. After years of persistent efforts and dialogues with some of the country’s most influential NGOs, both local and international, our founder began to consider establishing a foundation.
In 2020, during the height of the pandemic, our founder was approached with a proposal to establish a foundation that could address critical corporate pressure pains. After registering the foundation, our founder sought support from leaders across South Africa to encourage individuals and organisations to address pressing social issues.
Housing emerged as one of the paramount concerns, and the pandemic underscored its urgency. Although many corporate partners acknowledged its significance, they hesitated to deviate from their established strategies. In some instances, the prospect of reshaping boardroom dynamics deterred them.
In 2023, the Given Group Foundation has launched quietly, with a renewed commitment to engaging partners willing to fund what we call “first-grade social problems.” We are developing a funding index tool to ensure effective impact, as we focus on two core pillars: client partnerships and programmes, and programme implementation, delivery and activations.
Join us on this meaningful journey of positive change. The Given Group Foundation is the philanthropic arm of CSR News, and our work revolves around empowering and uplifting communities while highlighting both governmental shortcomings and corporate misunderstandings of our communities’ genuine needs.
